STARS athletes success

The Coopers Coborn STARS (Supporting Talented Athletes on the Road to Success) squad is aimed at supporting athletes at the very top of the talent ladder.  Through school support, including lifestyle management and sport science support, we are aiming to relieve some of the pressure that these elite athletes face and ensure they can fully focus on both academic and sporting developments.

Last week 3 of the STARS, Niall Engerer, Tom Toolis and Phoebe Cipa travelled to Bisham Abbey for an elite athlete performance day run by the Youth Sport Trust.  The day consisted of workshops on themes including how to develop your 'brand' as an athlete, your support team and physical core training.  The sessions were led by some of GB top Olympic ahtletes including: Denise Lewis, Craig Heap, Michelle Griffith, Kerry Williams, Karen Pickering and Guin Batten.  It was a truly inspirational day and all Coopers students commented on how much it helped them focus on what needs to be done to reach the top of their sport.

Some recent STARS athlete successes include:

Niall Engerer à 4th in England for Squash (U17), last week selected to represent England in an International Tournament in May.

Senior Students Tennis - Mixed Event

Well done to the Senior Students Mixed tennis team who travelled to the prestigious Culford Tennis Academy on Wednesday 27th January.  Despite most team members not having tennis as a priority sport at this point in the season, all managed to raise their games on the day and worked well together in the four doubles matches:  James Davis and Adele Sammons managed to defeat the Culford 2nd pair convincingly, as did Billy Elliott and Emily Defroand.  The opponents first pair proved too strong for CCCS and both matches were narrowly lost.

With the score now tied at  matches all it was down to a championship doubles tie-break (first to 10 points) to decide who went through to the National Finals.  James Davis and Adele Sammons performed with extreme composure and edged out the opponents 10 points to 6 winning CCCS a place in the final!.

A fantastic result and we now wish them the best of luck at Bolton Indoor Arena on March 19th - 21st.  Well done!

Rugby Success!

The first XV rugby team saw off Ravens Wood School in convincing fashion on Wednesday 27th January as they recorded a 22-7 victory in the 7th Round of th Daily Mail Vase Cup.  The team are really peaking at the right time and we wish them every success in the quarter finals.

Indeed this is the furthest that CCCS first team have reached in this competition for over 7 years.  Well done and good luck to all the team!

Visit to London 2012 Olympic Site

Over the past 2 weeks (13th & 19th January) groups of Coopers Coborn students have visited the Aquatic Centre and the Olympic Stadium at the new development in Stratford for London 2012.  The visit allowed us to see the current construction work going with the buildings really taking shape (the iconic wave roof on the aquatic centre is now in place!).  Both trips proved to be inspirational for the students and staff involved and it is hoped Coopers Coborn students will be futher involved in London 2012 as it approaches.  Watch this space!!
Thank you goes to Alex Williams in year 7.  Due to a family member working on the site we were able to get exclusive access.  If anymore students want to share connections they have in sport, arrange trips, coaching etc, please let us know!

National Hockey Finals - 15.01.10

The U16 and U18 girls hockey teams competed in Sheffield and Birmingham this weekend in the National Schools Indoor Hockey Finals.

Both teams did exceptionally well.  The U18 team finished 4th overall with a 1-1 draw with Wakefield High and narrow defeats by Bromsgrove, Millfield and eventual winners Kingston Grammar.

The U16 girls put an excellent display of teamwork and were despartely unlucky to miss out on a place on the finals.  After finishing the pool in 2nd place they took on Millais School from Surrey and in a fairly even match finished down 7-2.  However an overall top 4 place finish in the country is a fantastic achievement so congratulations!

Well done to all girls that took part in both competitions... now on to the outdoor competition!!

November - December News

Apologies for the recent lack of updates.  It has been incredibly busy here in the department.  The games captains are now putting together a termly update of all the major sports successes.  Download the latest copy here:

CCCS Sports Update December 2009

Sports Presentation Evening

One of the main highlights of the last half term was our annual 'Sports Presentation Evening'.  It was another highly successful event with some excellent perfromances by our talented gymnasts, athletes, rowers, fencer and dancers (including Mrs Barrett!).  Our guest speaker was Kerry Williams, England International Hockey Player.  Her motivational speech was fascinating as she discussed how she has overcome many barriers in her life to make it to the top.  It was certainly an inspiring story for everyone in the room.  In addition to this she kindly coached some of our county hockey players in two separate sessions earlier on in the day.  Below are some pictures from the coaching sessions:

Congratulations to all award winners and participants in the evening.  Our thanks goes to Kerry and also to the Games Captains who compered the evening so briliantly!  Well done to:  Harry Trusler, Phoebe Cipa, Christian Burgess, Jemma Cresswell, Matthew Hawkes and Gemma Phillips.

At the end he sat down for a brief question and answer session where he gave some excellent advice on how to reach your goals in athletics.  An excellent experience and everyone at Coopers Coborn thanks Dwain for his time and effort!
